Could Tom Holland and Zendaya host the Oscars? – ABC News

Who do you think should host this year’s Oscars?

When the Film Updates Twitter account posed that very question – British actor Tom Holland was a name suggested repeatedly, with many pairing him with American actress Zendaya.

The pair starred together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has been one of the biggest movies of the pandemic.

It’s currently the sixth-highest grossing movie in history at the US box office, surpassing Titanic. At the rate it’s going, it’ll soon take the number five spot, which currently belongs to Avengers: Infinity War.

But could Tom Holland and Zendaya host the Oscars if the movie gets snubbed at the ceremony? In 2019, Black Panther became the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. It didn’t win that award, but won three others, becoming the first Marvel film to win an Academy Award.

Holland told The Hollywood Reporter in December that he would “love” to host the awards.

But past attempts at pairing younger stars attracted criticism with Anne Hathaway and James Franco’s hosting duties widely panned when they presented in 2011. Billy Crystal was invited back the following year.

The official twitter account for the Academy Awards also found people in support of  Holland and Zendaya when it posed a hypothetical.

But perhaps the best response was from legendary singer Dionne Warwick.

This year will mark the first time the Academy Awards will have a host since Jimmy Kimmel was at the reins in 2018, a back-to-back gig for him.

And with the Oscars again on ABC America – the late-night host’s home network – another shot on stage isn’t out of the question.

The last time a host was named, it was comedian and actor Kevin Hart who was supposed to headline the ceremony in 2019, but that failed to eventuate after a since-deleted homophobic tweet from 2011 was unearthed.

The Oscars were instead handed out by celebrity presenters.

Despite a surge in COVID-19 cases in the United States, the Oscars is scheduled to go ahead on March 27 in Los Angeles.

Ratings fell to a record low of 10.4 million people in the United States last year, with viewership of other awards shows also declining.

It’s been a tough season for awards shows with the controversy surrounding the Golden Globes, and the Critics’ Choice awards postponed indefinitely.

Previous hosts at the Oscars have included comedians Chris Rock and Ellen DeGeneres, who herself has faced controversy, prompting her to announce the final season of her talk show after an almost 20-year run.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced on February 8.
